Gents,

in the latest Lionel Catalog that came out today from Lionel. they announced a scale Auto Rack. So I took their measurements from the catalog and they measure out to cars we own. So if they are anything like the 60' box and the 4 bay covered hoppers they have come out with in recent past, these will be very nice!

http://www.lionel.com/

They also have a few new other products,
-SD80MAC
-NW2
few other new freight car,cabooses.. Steam Engines..

Well, it's Friday.. Take care,
Dan

I was hoping that Atlas would make some of these. I thought a few years ago it would happen... I did see the Lionel ones.

Very interesting. For several years, I've acquired the MTH short cars, lowered them, and installed Kadees, all because I came to doubt a scale 89 foot rack would be made. If they actually are made, I may just sample one or two of the Lionel cars.

Now I suppose someone should drop them an email about the correct reporting marks on the TTX-painted flats....

They look good. There's a 4-car assortment in a CSX set (hopefully there will be "break-up" sales) plus two additional ones for separate sale. They're listed as 24" long, but Lionel measures coupler tip to coupler tip, so it appears the bodies are the right length. I'd still like to Atlas do them, and the open ones as well since they already have a very sound platform in their 89-foot trailer flat.

ChipR,

The width of a real one runs 9'. reason is because of the
swing out of this type of car on adjacent tracks. as ref,
50' boxcars are 10'8" which is extreme width. So when you go
longer, the car has to get skinnier. so an auto rack is
maxed out in it's extremes for length, width and new height of
of 20'2". usual rack height is 19'6". So I would assume this Lionel Rack is 19'6" high or Plate G.

So if anyone gets their hands on a Lionel Rack. you have the
measurements. With that, I can send you a drawing or two.

Hope this helps?

Good Day,

These new Lionel Auto Carriers are going to be fantastic! I knew they were on the drawing board. I'm ready to buy when they supply these roadnames!

Swafford

It's not you, I thought the same thing when I first saw the photos. I'm assuming these are hand-made preliminary mock-ups.
Back in the 1980's when Lionel displayed it's new Santa Fe SD40 in their catalog it was a horribly disfigured hulk,
however the production model that actually came out was a beautiful scale state-of-the-art model (for it's time).

Hello all!
I sure would have liked to see Atlas build these, I think the detail and quality would be better, they already have an excellent start with the 89 foot flats, plus then they would be 2 rail!
Does anyone know if the Lionel cars are true scale and if they are going to have see through sides?
If Intermountain can do it in HO scale we shouldn't have to put up with solid "dimpled" sides in O scale!

I have no idea how these will turn out, but earlier Lionel "scale" cars like the PS-1 boxcar, milk car, AAR offset hopper, PS-4 flat car and ACF stock car all turned out excellently. Their one drawback is the lack of KD mounting pads.

Lionel made some modern refers that I bought into but still need to change out the trucks and couplers.
Wish someone would make a proto thrall centerbeam as they were used alot in Oregon forest idustries.

To change out the trucks and couplers on Lionel is easy. I have done many of their
scale cars. I am looking forward to the Autoracks.
