From late 1974 till they became CSX. Some are still going as remotor SD40-2.

SCL swaped most of their SD45\2 to partner Clinchfield for U36C with only few years of service. SCL prefered the lower maintaince cost of U boats.

SCL swapped 7 SD45s for the 7 Clinchfield U36Cs because CRR had no other GEs and maintaining 7 GEs in an otherwise all EMD roster was too expensive.

SCL owned 45 SD45 (10 from ACL and 35 bought new) and 15 SD45-2s.

Clinchfield was owned 50-50 by SCL and L&N and L&N was controlled by SCL.

Paul,

All SCL SD45-2's made it to CSX. One is still on CSX's property at a testing center while two exCRR SD45-2's are still on the property, one at a test center also while the other is at the Huntington Shops as a load tester. The latest disposition info I can find with a quick search is from 2007. At that time all the units were still existent. Some of the railroads and lease fleets the SD45-2's worked for after CSX and leading up to 2007 include MRL, Trona, DMIR, TFM, HATX, and HLCX.

The first repaint for some, if not all, of the units would have been Family Lines in the mid-late 1970's.

I could not find the year most went off CSX's roster, but the early 2000's would be my guess.

Jay

SCL 2054 went to Trona Railway, then went to Helm. It was then sold to Pan Am Railways where it currently operates as MEC 616.

Most of the former SCL SD45-2's were sold to Helm Leasing. CSX began retiring them around 1993 tho slowly. CSXT 8954 was the last former SCL unit in service (retired in 2010) and is now a permanent power assembly training piece at the REDI center in Atlanta. 2 former CRR SD45-2's remain active with 16-645E3 engines and classed as SD40-2's (2422/2423) - used at Rice Yard in Waycross GA. Former CRR 8969 is now CSXT HLS1 and is used for load testing at Huntington WVA. Still a true SD45-2.
