I have to admit that I pretty much run roundy round and wonder how many forumers do the same. My layout is generally designed that way because I am the only one that runs it and I don't like manual uncoupling for operations. How many will admit that they do the same.? Lets not hear from those that only run operational sessions with multiple operators. I admire those that have layouts that can be operated much the same way that a real RR runs.

I guess that'd be me - but one round takes about 20 minutes. My prototype really doesn't have much industry or switching possibilities - it's just there to move trains. So that's what I do!

I'm set up for ops, but if I throw a couple of switches, round and round she goes... There's something very therapeutic in watching a train loop around and around.

I'm very much roundy-round. Lately, I try to have a train running when I'm home. The worse thing for electro-mechanical devices is not using them. I try and rotate locos/rolling stock out from boxes they are stored in. If you've seen the pix of my layout, I don't have the industry sidings in yet. But I do like to switch cars in the yard once in a while. I have backed off model rr'ing a bit lately. I needed a break from the always something to do routine I got into. Paying attention to some other aspects of life. But the trains will run!

I would hazard a guess and say that, by far, most model railroads are designed as continuous loops, or if not, then provisions for loop running are part of the plan. Therefore, the preponderance of train running is of the roundy-round variety. Not deliberately, running a model railroad in prototypical fashion is something I have never experienced, and never will. I guess I'll never know what I'm missing.

Yep, it's an "oval" for me too. Good for the mind and attitude watching whatever I feel like running

I do...but that's because as of right now all I have is N-trak. Yet I'm designing a small town with industries on my modules so I can always do more than just round and round and round...

I have a double track main around the room, so I can run two trains roundy-round. However, there are two passing sidings and six industrial sidings that can be used, plus a full-service engine terminal and yard with nine storage tracks [ranging from 42 to 74 inches long so I can keep nine or more full trains on the layout all the time. The yard is designed for classification, but it is used as a staging yard. Since I run trains alone 95% of the time, an "operating session" usually consists of running each train for a couple of laps to make sure everything is working.

Not me..I get bored after the first few laps that's why I prefer ISLs..In fact I am building a ISL instead of the planned loop de loop that I started.

I've been a roundy-round guy since I was a wee lad. Watching model trains run around in circles has always been a joyful experience for me. And the more, the better

Cheers,

Although i can do some switching i prefer to let the trains run. I really like watching my N scale trains run thru the best scenery i can build. I admire the layouts that are for operations but that is just not me.

Put me down in the roundy round column!

My current small layout has some switching opportunities, but they are very limited.

I am working on a larger, around the room layout (my "Dream Layout"). Planning is currently stalled awaiting another 'inspiration', but it WILL have provisions for roundy round. I am a lone wolf operator, so I want to be able to run mainline trains AND work another train at the same time.

The planning is stalled because I received many comments about my several trackplan revisions that referred to them as "toy-like" or "Lionel-ish". I'm beginning to think, however, that "toy-like" and "Lionel-ish" is probably what I'm looking for in a layout! Or maybe I'm just anxious to start a new layout! LOL

Ideally, it would be nice to have an 'operational' layout with provision for continuous running but I haven't been able to come up with a plan that I really like.

So, roundy round it is, and roundy round it will probably be!

Darrell, quiet...for now

My layout was built for point-to-point operation, or rather staging-yard to staging-yard operation, where the two staging-yards represent distant towns in each direction. However, I also have a continuous run option that can be set simply by aligning two turnouts to cut off the staging yards.

When I operate the layout on my own I set it to continuous run mode with a through train running around the layout on one throttle, while I switch trains with another.

Goes w/o saying that the GS&SV is a soup bowl but it's cool.
If I want veriety I can change directions of the trains as well as changing the era of the trains.
Something really cool about seeing 4 trains running at once in opposite directions.

I'm also in the roundy-round category at the moment. Hopefully within the next year I will be able to use my current roundy-round layout as the starting point it was always intended to be for "the big one". Here's hoping!
