My crack research staff tells me that Key's NYC L-4B Mohawk and PRR M1-a 4-8-2's were both released around the same time (circa 1992). Can anyone (possibly named Ebi) tell me if the two models share the same basic chassis/mechanism?

Thanks for calling.

As to release date, I got NYC Mohawk in May of 1993 just after released because I had reserved.
Although I got PRR M1A in Aug of 1994, I'm not sure when it was done because I was not interested in PRR then
and I had not reserved it.
I think that I got it about half a year after released.

I'd like someone to advise it to us.

As to drive mechanism, they have the following basic theory but some differences.

The drive line from the motor to the gear box is one integrated part by connecting them physically
with a flat brass bar called as a torque arm.
The gear box end rides on the geared driver axle and the motor end is anchored to the main frame thru a spring.
All drivers have the coiled suspension springs.
Since the drive line is floating under the spring tension, the geared drivers freely move up and down
under the suspension springs so that they can firmly grip rails regardless of any irregularities of rails.
All other drivers are driven by the side rods.

I think that the motors of the both engines are the same as shown on your picture.

Major differences are

The geared driver is the 2nd for NYC but the 3rd one for PRR.

The side rods are three pieces per side for NYC but two pieces per side for PRR for which one is the 1st to the 2nd
and the other is the one straight rod connecting the 2nd, 3rd and 4th drivers.

All drivers have flanges for NYC but the 2nd and 3rd are flangeless for PRR.

But dang, here I was hoping I might be able to avoid having to purchase an M1-a. Ah well
