I have an Atlas C40-8 with the 4-function decoder. I removed it and put in a Soundtraxx decoder, so I'll be reusing the Atlas 4-function somewhere else.
The old 2-function decoders had a jumper board to select between DC and DCC. The 4-function decoder, at least in the C40-8, has a rather tall switch which may cause clearance problems in other locomotives.
What is the pinout for this switch? Can I remove it and jumper it permanently DCC with some excess component lead material? Which pins get connected to which for DCC operation?
You definitely should be able to remove the switch and jumper it permanently for DCC. I do not know for sure the pinout for the switch, but I suspect it is a DPDT switch witch the center two pins going to the motor and one set of outer pins going to the track power and the other set of outer pins going to the decoder output. If you have a multimeter and you can remove the switch without destroying it, it should be easy enough to determine the pinout. Just set the switch to DCC and check the pins to see which ones have continuity, the ones with continuity are the ones you want to replace with a jumper on the board.
