Wow, looks like it will be a very merry Union Pacific Athearn Christmas judging from the new products just announced. Looks like my wallet will get another break thank god. Still praying for a EL SDP45 though.

How does this stuff .....yes, I'm a UP fan...how does this stuff hurt my wallet. It WON'T BE HERE until June 2009 and this is still 2008. Of course it pays to live in the number one model RR retail market in the country...CHICAGO.

Nothing for me, but I did notice a run of GP40-2's including, among other things, Chessie, Conrail, and Alaska RR......what on earth could've put that idea into their heads??
|
Top Five prototypes I'd like to have in HO scale: 1. GP40-2 phase 2c (Atlas!) 2. Trinity RD-2 coal hoppers in various southeastern utility schemes 3. Late-phase L&N style Bethlehem 4-bay coal hoppers 4. Raceland-built 52'6" Chessie gons 5. Late-phase Pullman Standard 5277 waffle boxes (SCL/CRR/CSX)
"I used to think I was actually a railroad prototype modeler...man am I glad somebody finally set me straight."

This info from Athearn regarding the turbines:
88661 - #51, no tender, Farr grilles, gray trucks (as delivered) 88662 - #60, no tender, carbody openings, gray trucks (as delivered) 88663 - #54, with tender, standard carbody openings (combination of chicken wire grills and louvers), silver trucks (the art on the announcement is wrong on the truck color) 88664 - #58, with tender, non-standard carbody openings, silver trucks 88665 - Tender, unnumbered, silver trucks
Sincerely,
Athearn Trains
I'm wondering what the difference is between "standard" and "non-standard" is--anyone???

The air intakes were originally on the side of the car body, that was standard. If you have the original announcement from Athearn unit 51 has light blue grills in 4 groups on the car body, that is the original configuration. This was apparently deemed not sufficient and experiments were conducted and several different variants were tried. Roof intakes were used with differing amounts of openings on the car body side. Unit 54 shows most of the forward openings covered up. Other units had different amounts of the side in takes covered up. those were non-standard. I can't find my book on the UP Turbines, so I can not remember any other examples off the top of my head. If you remember back to when Tower 55 first announced they were going to do the "Big Blows," the three units turbines, their plans were do all the different variations, which I think were different roof air intakes. I'm sure UP fans are hoping that Athearn will do more of these as the announcement implies when it refers to road number specific details.
