Hi all,
On the Railflyer (maker of Canadian cab kits) modeling help section the owner states a couple of days ago that Atlas is going to release a GP40-2W version in the fall of 2009.
I have not seen this anywhere else. Anyone have anymore insight on this?
If it's true, please release in Guilford, Pan Am phase 1 and 2 paint schemes.

I was told this same news at the NMRA show in Philly a year or two ago. It came from a vendor that was not Atlas. It would be nice to see...

I hope this is true. In spite of what many may think, I believe this would be a winner for Atlas. Aside from CN versions, there are plenty of second hand users including KCS. That would make me more excited than a GP15 or M420W. I'd take a Guilford and both Pan Am versions, possibly even one or two for my freelance roadname. This would be a good..no great thing.

With Chessie and CN counting for the lions share of GP40-2 production you'd think a GP40-2W and WL would be available. If CN, CP or some other 'foreign railway' had 50000 of a certain model EMD and say RI had 1 of an obscure Westinghouse boxcab, we know with 99% certainty that a dozen model companies would be tripping over each other trying to one up each other for the RI one. Don't hold your breath waiting for any mass produced plastic RTR correct 'Canadian' version of any motive power. Its possible but not likely. Call me bitter, but 35-40 years of modelling CP has taught me better. Only recently has 'True line' brought out some quasi correct stuff. Hats off to Rapido, their stuff is about 99% correct over-all.

Call me a skeptic as well. The CN "Comfort Cab" is only one of the changes that Atlas would need to make to the recent GP40-2 to make it a CN model. Canadian steps would need to be put onto the model, different anticlimber, hood louvers, horizontal electrical box, not to mention changing the long hood to incorporate the recessed brakewheel on the engineers side at the back of the long hood. With the way the rivet counters are today, Atlas would be doing themselves a huge disservice if they were to re-release their GP40-2 with just the cab changed. It's one of those, "I'll believe it when I see it" things, but I actually hope that I'm wrong as I know many CN modelers who would embrace this model and probably go broke for it. Not to mention it would make my life easier as I have several CN's in the works for modelers in the area. They are a tough kitbash but CN modelers are very picky......

From the Railflyer site:
Christopher Howard - Sep 2, 2008 4:23 PM PDT
...Atlas is producing a GP40-2W for next fall. So my goal is to release complete locomotive kits for the GP38-2W / GP40-2W / SD40-2W by next fall..."

Interesting... I'd pick up a couple in CN stripes if they made some of the other changes besides the wide cab.

Come on now.....the C415 is one that RI had, nobodys making em, and I really dont expect anyone to make em either, and I'm not paying for the brass one!
Yeah theres that really, uh bad version done in plastic a few years ago, but I'm not paying $40 bucks for something I'm gonna cut up to make right!

Well if they make them then perhaps they can make the Wide Cab SD40-2 to go along with it. If they make the units I know that I would get several of each model. Lets hope the rumor is true.

I'm no fan of the CN, but those GP40-2W's are some great looking engines. It would certainly be tempting to pick a few up if done by Atlas.

It would be nice if this eventually proves to be true. Never thought I would see one of these in RTR form but with all of the secondhand buyers it does seem possible now. Boy, if you want to model any CN train across Northern Ontario from the mid 1970's to mid 1990's a set of three of these will replicate about 75% of the locomotive consists in that time period!

When Atlas did the Dash 8-40, they also did the Dash 8-40BW and tooled up a third variant, the Amtrak-only Dash 8-32BW which sports enough differences from a standard 8-40BW that a separate hood, sill and cab were required.
There's no reason why Atlas can't tool up a different hood, sill and cab for the GP40-2W, given that the same thing was done in the above example.
