Don, awesome work as always. Put me on the list to purchase any DVD you put out.
What manufacturer/importer built the SD40? And what drive system is in it? The reason I ask is because it would seem that it doesn't have an excessive gap between the trucks and frame and it really looks good. This is a pet peev of mine. I go by where the lift pad is in relation to the top of the truck. In the picture of the model it seems slightly lower than the lift pad of the prototype locomotive. This is extremely rare with 3 rail type drive system. Just curious, thanks.
One other question: How did you reproduce those 3 outlines of rectangles on the Katy hopper? It's amazing how it looks exactly like the prototype.

Hey Phil, Its an Atlas of course! Actually it does look to have a better fit than the SD-35's I have. I wonder of Atlas made an adjustment?
The Katy hopper was done with the little pieces of cardboard that surround razor blades. Don

Don, Fantastic job!!!
I am currently replacing my Atlas diesel couplers with Kadees. How did you mount the Kadee coupler to the SD-40? Did you drill new holes in the coupler mounting plate? I have removed the coupler mounting plate from the SD-40 and I am trying to figure out the best option. Using the existing 1-72 hole in the mounting plate has the coupler stick out too far and there is not enough stability. (As you know!) I plan on using 2-56 screws.
...I figured that an expert like you would know the best way to do this!

Hi Conrad, Its quite simple. Just remove the Atlas coupler and drill a 1/16 inch hole in the existing plastic mounting plate. If you want to use 2/56, use a larger bit. Next take a 1/2 inch 72 screw (or 56) and secure it. Use an 805 as the engines put more stress on the couplers and this all metal coupler will hold up better. Let me know by email dsmith041@maine.rr.com if you have further questions. Best, Don

Don, Thanks for your advice!
I converted 4 Atlas SD-40s to Kadee 805 couplers over the weekend. I drilled a 1/16" hole at the back of the coupler mounting plate to place the coupler 1/8" further back (using a 1-72 screw). That made a big difference! I also did not need any coupler mounting shims. The coupler matched the coupler height gauge.
Several months ago, I stocked up on various lengths of 1-72 and 2-56 screws and couplers shims. I have also converted several MTH freight cars.
I have been using Kadee 805's for all my coupler conversions. So far, I have converted over 100 Atlas cars. ...Some of these were originally 3-rail.
Take care,
