Well, I am busy again changing another part of my layout. I couldn't find the old pictures so I will simply say this area was nothing but trees before the change and I also added on to the shelf at the left (in the first photo) to make it wider. I wanted to model a small cross roads business scene (Vernona, Indiana) with the Pennsy branch passing through with no spurs or places to switch. I think model railroaders sometimes tend to add spurs in every town modeled when in real life tracks often passed through small towns with no spurs and on line customers. I have enough places to switch anyway. The first picture is an over all view of the area and the second picture is where I plan on placing the structures. I need to build another gas station for the empty corner. Back in the 50's and 60's, many of these cross road towns (if you can call it a town) had a couple of gas stations, a general store, and maybe a small mom and pop eating establishment. I still need to add the ground cover, pavement for parking around the structures, weeds, and some trees as the new scene is not yet completed. Oh, and yes, the mouse hole will not be seen. It will be covered with trees so a visitor cannot get a clear view of the opening. I will also put some trees behind the mouse hole. Tom Johnson

The next couple of pictures show where I added a corn field. I felt the corn field was needed and not more trees. I still need to fill in with dirt around the weeds and Busch corn. I took a digital picture of a real corn field for the backdrop and then painted the background trees and distant corn field with acrylic paints. This also blended in everything with the digital photo. I added the Busch corn field in front of the digital photo of the real corn field to add 3-D depth. I am extremely happy with the results. I might clear out more wooded areas on my layout and add more corn fields. I had to paint the corn the various shades of tan as they are molded green in the box.

Here is Indiana State Highway 17 that I modeled the same way as my other roads that I have posted in the past.

Here are some of the structures that will soon be added (minus the gas station I still need to build). First up is Karrie's Hamburgers (Blair Line Fred and Red's Hamburgers and Chili).

Next is K&J's Antiques. It is a Walther's Gold Ribbon kit (Post Road Pet Supply).

Next is Verona General Store. It is a Walther's Gold Ribbon kit (Bensons's Five and Dime) painted white with many extra's. The addition was cut from another Gold Ribbon kit (Wally's Warehouse....back side) and added to the main store and is the Gulf gas station annex attached to Verona General Store. Also note, I used digital pictures of real store interiors with signs copied and pasted on top of them for my store windows. They are glued in place behind the clear plastic glass.

Finally, Overmyer Tractor Repair Sales and Service. This place will have all kinds of old and new tractors all around the structure. It is also a Walther's kit (State Line Farm Supply).

I'll show the finished scene in a future SPF.

Tom, Super job on the buildings and the corn field is really great, it all ties in very well. I like the idea about the window treatments. Dick

Tom aka INRAIL,
Busy again you say, well then congratulations. That sir is some amazing modeling. Your talent is a true inspiration to those of us mere mortals who "like to play with trains". Please do show us your completed scene.

Remember the Kim's House Project from last fall? Well, it's been a tumultuous year, but that doesn't justify how long this sucker took to get to this stage. When I plant it on the layout I'll finish up the utilities and stuff that makes it look lived. Essentially, I lowered the roof and changed the shape. The rest is just fairly simple parts changes. Enclosed porch is an assembly of Pike-Stuff parts. Shutters are Tichy. Garage is Great West with a Pike Stuff door. When it's planted I'll put a huge Boxelder tree over hanging the roof to justify the extreme weathering necessary to cover a bad splice.
