I am very happy with the view and the performance of the new Bachmann Acela HHP-8, this engine has also a DCC decoder factory installed but still has this ancient rapido couplers on. strange ey. a conversion to Microtrains is easy and can be done in less than an hour. to get the right height I have had to cheat a little bit. the coupler case is from #1015 and the coupler itself is from a #2004.

the antiquated look before the conversion

remove the front part (screw)

remove this black plastic part

remove the ancient coupler and the spring, remove the red part with a xuron edge cutter
and a x-acto knife and you'll have an opening exact the same width as a Microtrains #1015
coupler case

all the parts removed, take care that all the cuts are square and flat

drill a hole from the underside (for the screw to fix the coupler with),
you can use the plow as your jig, drill the hole right in the center of the plow
(as you can see on the picture !)

open the hole in the front pilot so a Microtrains #1015 will fit properly (remove the
red part), take care that also the bottom of the opening is square and flat

the coupler fixed on with a screw (you have to shorten the srew a little bit)
make sure that you isolate the srew with a piece of black duct tape
coupler case #1015 - coupler #2004 !!

done, front part back on the engine, voila, easy ey ?

Here is my take. I used the T shank coupler:

The T shank fits nicly with a bit of filing.

I didn't put the black yoke back on, just a bit of super glue will work perfectly.

The hight lines up perfectly.
